これらの部分を読むために、～ing形と比較について冒頭で簡単な説明をしました。中２や中３で習う事柄ですが、本文を読むために必要な最低限の形を伝えました。
やはり原文を読んで日本語訳と対照すると気づくことがあります。an ounceが「三十グラム」と訳されていたり、shaking her headが「頭」ではなく「首」を振るとされていたり、A plump woman outside an apothecary shop (…) as they passedをまとめて「薬問屋の店の前で丸々とした女性が…」のように訳されていたりということです。特にoutsideはその前の場面では「外」と訳されていたのに、ここではas they passedとあわせて「前」と訳されていました。outside ~で「～の外」というように、前置詞の使い方もここで伝えることができました。
２つ目の抜粋では、He looked even smaller and skinner than he was because all he had to wear were old clothes of Dudley’s and Dudley was about four times bigger than he was.の部分に苦労しました。時間の都合もあったので、私が辞書の役割からはみ出て、どこで区切るかをヒントとして言いました。He looked even smaller and skinner than he was / because all he had to wear were old clothes of Dudley’s / and Dudley was about four times bigger than he was.のように区切ります。するとそのヒントだけで意味をつかんでくれました。すごいことです。
